Avoid Final Exam Time Conflicts

As you know, final exams are not administered during normal class meeting times; your exams will be on different days (and at different times) than your classes meet during the semester. Even though your Blinn and A&M class schedules are coordinated, it’s possible that you could have a final exam scheduled for the same time at both schools. Obviously you will not be able to be in two places simultaneously, so double-check your final exam times to ensure you will not experience a conflict. It’s ALWAYS less stressful to resolve such conflicts before the last minute.

The final exam schedule for A&M is here: http://registrar.tamu.edu/General/FinalSchedule.aspx#_Spring_2013 .

The final exam schedule for Blinn is here: http://www.blinn.edu/faculty/FINAL_EXAM_spring_2013_bryan_campus.pdf .

If you discover that you have a final exam time conflict between Blinn and A&M, here is what to do:
1. Check the schedule of courses to determine if either of your instructors teach more than one section of the course.
2. If so, check the final exam schedule to see if the other section has its final exam scheduled for a time that would fit your schedule.
3. Approach the instructor and explain your dilemma. Ask for permission to take the final exam with the other section.
4. If your instructor wants a letter from your department to formalize your request, please let us know the details and we will gladly provide it.
5. If your instructor does not teach more than one section, ask if you can be allowed to take the final exam early.
6. If the other section’s final exam also conflicts with your schedule, or if your instructor is uncooperative, notify us of the details and we will get involved.
7. If your instructor agrees to allow you to test at an alternate time, it is recommended that you confirm this via email so that you have a written record of the agreement.

There is a student rule at A&M that states that you can’t have three final exams on the same date (you are allowed to get one of them changed to a different date). TEAM students usually do not have three A&M courses, and there is no rule that protects Blinn students in this same way. However, if you have a total of three or more final exams on the same day, please let us know so that we can support your appeal to your professors.

There have been incidents of students waiting until the last minute to discuss an exam conflict with the instructor, and some of those situations were not smoothly resolved. Especially during finals, be sure to check your email from both A&M and Blinn daily. If the location or time of an exam must be changed at the last minute, you will be notified by email. There has been at least one incident in which a TEAM student missed an exam because of failure to read email. The student was not allowed to retest because once you have been emailed you have been officially notified, whether or not you actually read the email.
